Beef on the bone - one of Britain's favourites - gets a boost from EU decisions introduced in the UK tomorrow - 26 April 2008

The European Commission has raised the age limit at which the vertebral column has to be removed from beef from 24 to 30 months, based on the best scientific advice from the European Food Safety Authority, and following three months of statutory scrutiny by the European Parliament.

John Cross, Chairman of EBLEX Ltd, the Beef and Lamb Sector Company said: "This is a much- awaited decision which will be warmly welcomed by the whole industry.

"Not only does it give the shopper greater choice in the range of beef products on offer, but it also provides an opportunity for smaller butchers' shops and processors in particular to provide top quality, mature beef on the bone which is very much in demand."

Consultation first step to concrete strategy

The combined forces of the Department for Environment, Food And Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Welsh Assembly today announced the first step in formulating a strategy to protect the UK's honeybees - a consultation which "sets out a plan for the future direction of work aimed at sustaining the health of honeybees and beekeeping in England and Wales for the next decade".

According to Defra, there are around "44,000 beekeepers in the UK who maintain around 274,000 colonies of honeybees" and the "economic value of crops grown commercially in the UK that benefit from bee pollination is estimated at around £120m-£200m" a year.
