This is not another industry moan about rising prices of production but a realistic look at the livestock sector which impacts on the meat you buy in the shops or direct from the farmer.

Recent media headlines about confidence returning to the farming sector fail to take into account that costs of producing meat have also risen steeply. That was the message from John Cross, chairman of EBLEX, speaking at the organisation’s National Producers Conference in Bristol last Monday.

“These positive headlines need to take into account the increase in input costs for beef and sheep producers, and the long term impact of both domestic and global market forces,” said Cross, pointing to EBLEX’s 2007 Business Pointers to reinforce his message.

Lords and Commons eat Tomatoes

British tomato growers have been asked to supply their fruit to restaurants in the Houses of Parliament, as part of British Tomato Week.

Chefs in both the Lords and the Commons are planning special tomato menus throughout the promotional week, from May 19.

Members of the British Tomato Growers’ Association (TGA) will be on hand to raise awareness about the UK tomato season, as volumes build to their peak.

Natural England announces extra £72m for the natural environment

Following a meeting of its Board, Natural England has announced that an additional £72m will be spent on the natural environment this year.

Further to an additional £68m for green farming schemes, Natural England has announced that it will allocate an extra £4m this year towards protecting and enhancing the marine environment, improving biodiversity and researching renewable energy options in the Severn Barrage.
