The government has launched a £2 million (€2.52m) fund to back partnerships between major retailers and African farmers, in a bid to support trade with the developing world.

"Buying from developing countries makes clear business sense - not only are you sourcing quality products that compete on price but you are also meeting the increasing consumer thirst to buy ethically," said Gareth Thomas, international development minister, speaking at the first 'Procurement for Development Forum'.

Defra moves to protect UK honeybees

Consultation first step to concrete strategy

The combined forces of the Department for Environment, Food And Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Welsh Assembly today announced the first step in formulating a strategy to protect the UK's honeybees - a consultation which "sets out a plan for the future direction of work aimed at sustaining the health of honeybees and beekeeping in England and Wales for the next decade".

According to Defra, there are around "44,000 beekeepers in the UK who maintain around 274,000 colonies of honeybees" and the "economic value of crops grown commercially in the UK that benefit from bee pollination is estimated at around £120m-£200m" a year.

Brussels celebrates British produce

The NFU will celebrate its centenary year with an event at the prestigious Bibliothèque Solvay at the heart of the European Union institutions in Brussels on Thursday (April 10).

The evening will showcase the best of British produce, including fruit and vegetables, and some of Europe’s leading decision-makers will also get the chance to toast the NFU’s hundredth birthday with a glass of Farmers Harvest, the ale brewed specially as part of the centenary celebrations.
