Small farmer wins moral victory!

Percy Schmeiser has a check for $660 and a Right Livelihood Award to prove that sometimes the little guy wins. In a modern version of the David vs. Goliath story, a 77 year-old Saskatchewan farmer and his wife are now considered folk heroes following settlement of their legal battle with agribusiness giant Monsanto Canada Inc., after the company sued them for patent violation of genetically engineered canola seeds in 1997.

The Schmeisers were sued after plants from the genetically modified canola seeds were found on their farm near Bruno, Saskatchewan.

Wells and Young’s become the first major brewery to be certified with the Red Tractor Logo

Leading UK brewery, Wells and Young's, has become the first major brewer to promote the Red Tractor logo. The Bedford based company will now carry the Red Tractor logo on all its bottles of Young's Bitter in a move to assure consumers that the ale is made using only British raw ingredients.

Jonathan Tipples, Vice Chairman of Assured Food Standards (AFS) says: "The Red Tractor logo signifies that the ale has been brewed in the UK using hops, malt and barley produced to high standards on the farm and checked by independent inspections.

Food strike plan for the UK splits farmer opinion

Farmers For Action is considering a one-day food strike on Aug 22 to raise awareness that food price increases in supermarkets are not keeping pace with rises in input costs.

FFA chairman David Handley said the idea was being “talked about” but no firm decision had been made.

Cumbrian food producers are taking to the small screen to offer some of the finest quality food in England, proving how demand for regional grub is hotting up.

Food lovers across Britain will be tuning in to QVC, the UK’s leading shopping channel, to watch “Tastes of the Lake District” between 3pm and 4pm on Monday 7th April.

The Pie Mill in Keswick, The Pudding Room on the shores of Lake Coniston, The Old Smokehouse in Brougham, Penrith and Sillfield Farm in Endmoor, Kendal, have all been selected to take part in the programme.
